Skate Ubuntu – A Skatepark for Grahamstown

In Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, students are looking to skateboarding as a way of inflicting change in their community. Skate Ubuntu is a non-profit organisation founded in 2017 by Rhodes University students Shannon Hansen and Sean Devonport and is kept alive by the current Grahamstown youth. The aim of the initiative is to keep children and young adults active, to inspire creativity, to form lasting connections between the historically segregated communities of Grahamstown.

The organisation has secured a location close to many schools at a community engagement centre in Hlalalani location in Grahamstown. The park has been designed by Stuart Walker from Deep End Skateparks and has been quoted at R400 000 which cover the cost of the park, skateboards and other skating equipment. The organisation has been in the process of creating funds by hosting fundraising events which involve live music, art and performances however the money raised is not enough to support the dream. Skate Ubuntu needs help keeping the initiative alive and calls upon anyone who is willing to help or donate in any way.
