Greenhills Skate Park – West Rand

Words by – Kgosi Pali Marite (Pan African Skateboarding Consultants)

The whole thing started just after varsity. I was at home looking for a job and I decided that because I had some free time I would focus on doing something I’d always wanted to do for the skateboarding scene in the West Rand.

With some assistance from the Randfontein Publicity Association, we managed to get the attention of the right people to source sponsorship from Lafarge and get space at the Tennis club. This was only the beginning though.

2 months later, I got a call from Antonie who is the owner of F1 Granite, he wanted to sponsor some granite for the park. We finally had enough resources to build ledges. We decided that it should be a project by the West Rand skaters for the West Rand skaters. So we invited the homies to come and help build over a weekend. After watching a couple of DIY videos we managed to put up two marble ledges at the spot. Currently open to the public for free.

If you’re ever in the West Rand (Gauteng) be sure to check out the new local spot. We also host regular events in the form of Skate Jam Sessions on the last Saturday of every month.

We would like to thank all the parties involved in this project. Without them we would not have this spot – Lafarge, F1 Granite, White bread and butter, Golden West Social Housing, Randfontein Local Council and the District Council, the Greenhills Tennis Club, RPA, PASC and all the dudes that came out to help build.
